Today the Commission authorised extension until 31 October 2002 of the aid schemes put in place for the air industry by nine countries – Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom – following the terrorist attacks in the USA on 11 September 2001.
Today the Commission authorised extension until 31 October 2002 of the aid schemes put in place for the air industry by these countries. This decision by the Commission ties in fully with its earlier decisions(1) and with its communications of 10 October 2001 and 2 July 2002 on The repercussions of the terrorist attacks in the United States on the air transport industry. In these the Commission announced that some types of aid, including aid for insurance intended to compensate for damage caused by extraordinary calamities, could be granted to the air transport industry by way of exception.
The Commission also repeated the statement which it had made at the Council meeting on transport on 3 and 4 October 2002 that the present state of the air transport market in Europe no longer justifies any further extension of the national guarantee schemes. Since 31 October 2002 the Commission has been continuing to apply the Treaty rules on State aid on a case-by-case basis, taking account of specific situations.
