Athens` new international airport will be put through its paces over the next five months following the launch of a trial period on October 7.
However, the state-of-the-art facility, located east of Athens, is facing technical difficulties which pose a risk in its securing of Jar-Jus operational licence from the international air safety organisation GAA.
One of the basic problems concern maintenance hangars, though airport director Matthias Mitscherlich points out that most will be ready before the facility opens, as planned, in March. Construction requires 18 months and works began in February 2000 rather than September 1999.
According to recent reports, the GAA forbids the operation of the airport on March 1, 2001.
