Opening of new Duchess’s Stand provides Epsom and the South of England with one of its most versatile and adaptable venues. Epsom Downs Racecourse celebrated the start of a new era this month as Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cornwall, officially opened Epsom’s new Stand – the Duchess’s Stand – in her honour.
The official opening of The Duchess’s Stand signifies the completion of a £38 million, three-year redevelopment project which has seen the construction of a new 120 bedroom on-site Holiday Inn Express hotel, Entrance Pavilion and Grandstand.
The 11,000 capacity Grandstand has been designed for both racing and non-racing events throughout the year and boasts the large 1123m² Oaks Hall on the ground floor, which doubles as an 800 seat conference venue outside of racing. The first floor has three restaurants and is flexible for conferences, banqueting and racing, whilst the second floor has fourteen private boxes and the Downs View Suite, which can host over 100 people.
Nick Blofeld, Managing Director of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said: “The positive feedback from the opening of the Duchess’s Stand and our attendance at International Confex is already creating plenty of interest with requests for information and tours of the new facilities for meetings, weddings, incentives, conferences and other events. “Interest has been shown by major companies in many areas including the pharmaceutical sector, finance and even the motor industry, as the Duchess’s Stand provides the region and the South of England with one of its most versatile and adaptable venues.”
2009 will also see a return to a full race programme at Epsom Downs Racecourse with 14 race days including the world famous Derby Festival, and five Epsom Live! evenings in July featuring Status Quo, Scouting For Girls, The Saturdays, Kelly Rowland, Alesha Dixon, Bjorn Again and UB40.
