Olympic Airways<.> has revised a decision to cancel its direct Athens-Melbourne route following talks with government officials from the Victoria State Government, Melbourne airport authorities, the Hellenic Society, Greek travel agents and members of the Greek Community in Australia. Members of the diaspora offered substantial financial assistance in order to retain the link with Greece.

OA managing director Rod Lynch said that although Sydney remained the most profitable route, the link with Melbourne was reviewed in light of the firm`s new financial position as regards the latter.

OA`s summer flight schedule begins on March 26 and will include two weekly flights to Melbourne and three to Sydney. From mid-August onwards there will be one flight per week to Melbourne.

Discussions with the Australia`s Greek community will continue throughout the summer while demand for flights will be continuously monitored before a final decision is made.

OA is required to increase the frequency of flights to Australia in the case that aircraft is available and the routes bring a profit.
