Olympic Airways<.> manager Rod Lynch`s proposals to alter the company`s familiar six-ringed emblem carry many risks, the Hellenic Olympic Committee president Lambis Nikolaou has warned.

The issue of OA`s name and logo, which resembles the Olympic Games` five rings, was recently raised by the US and Turkey in light of the fact that – in many countries – strict laws exist to protect the Games` symbol and use of the word Olympic.

At one stage Turkey had banned OA from flying into Istanbul unless, within a certain period of time, it changed its emblem and name. However, the Turkish Olympic Committee intervened and the ban was lifted.

A few months ago the US attempted to stop OA from featuring the symbol on the wing of a plane pictured in the company website.

OA`s emblem has existed for more than 40 years, when the Olympic symbol was not protected, Nikolaou said.

Lynch has denied that OA intends changing the emblem. The well-known logo? No, we have no plans to change the logo, he said.

One of Olympic`s best assets is in fact the six rings and, of course, the blue and white. We may modernise this as time goes by and if you look carefully at Olympic`s existing fleet, I think you will find many variations, some of them less than subtle and usually for the wrong reasons.

Like aircraft that are only partially painted, some with extra colours, some with less. It`s a bit of a mess. It needs tidying up. So were are going to standardise it.

If that [the colour scheme] changes in the future, that is another matter. There are no plans as of now to change the company`s logo.
