OECD has agreed to take on the responsibility of finding a solution to problems in the Greek passenger ship sector recently highlighted by the Hellenic Association of Travel and Tourist Agencies (HATTA<.>). In meetings held between OECD experts and merchant marine ministry officials, it was agreed that the industry has oligopolistic tendencies.

The OECD experts focused on the creation of mechanisms which would promote competition in the market, the method of issuing permits of intent and state intervention in fare pricing.

Officials at the European Commission`s shipping department recently indicated concern about the Greek shipping industry`s abilities to adapt to the market conditions that will take effect after cabotage is abolished.
