Two public tenders called by the Hellenic Tourism Organisation (
EPE Argyris Papargyropoulos was named the winner of the bid to operate the bar and restaurants and will pay an annual rent of 105 million drachmas. It is obliged to implement an investment plan involving the full upgrading of these facilities as well as the construction of a parking area for 4,000 vehicles. The company is set to spend 800 million drachmas on the project which should be complete by 2003.
The firm Nova Ideal, which is owned by the Klaoudatos group, will undertake responsibility for the centre`s advertising mediums and pay an annual fee of 73 million drachmas.
It will be required to establish new television facilities, ticketing procedures and provide a new bus to serve the centre`s needs. Nova Ideal has set aside a budget of 83 million drachmas for this purpose while an additional 25 million drachmas will be spent every two years to cover the cost of updating staff uniforms.
According to the results of the last decade, the centre has been running at a loss of 158 million drachmas per annum, on average. It is expected that, as a result of the two tenders, the centre should begin making a small profit of 20 million drachmas initially while efforts to lower operating costs should further increase turnover.
EOT general secretary Evgenios Yiannakopoulos said he was satisfied with this positive result as it would benefit both the tourism organisation and patrons of the centre.
