RHODES – The Dodecanese<.> development authority has launched a pilot programme involving cooperation between Greece and Italy which aims at promoting quality tourism.

The scheme, named `The Lakes of Odysseus`, seeks to improve local conditions which may assist in advancing the tourism industry.

Stathis Kousournas, head of the development authority, told TravelDailyNews that the programme comprises various facets including:


The creation of a tourist guide in printed and electronic format which promotes local attractions of archaeological, environmental and gastronomic interest.

Creation of tourism information booths at the ports of Kos, Rhodes and Patmos which can make suggestions on areas to visit.

Advertising and promotions.

Pilot programmes.


`Lakes of Odysseus` will cover the Cycladic and Dodecanese islands in Greece and be divided into the thematic areas of culture, environment and local produce/cuisine.

The programme, which involves relevant local bodies and authorities, is expected to be finalised in June 2001.
