Rhodes<.> tourist traffic has risen by 1.26% compared to the same period last year, the Hellenic Tourism Organisation (EOT) reports.

Its hotels are currently hosting around 84,000 foreign and domestic visitors, up from 83,000 during the corresponding period in 1999. Foreign arrivals number 78,641, slightly up from 78,234.

The greatest increase can be seen in the number of Greek travellers, who this year number 5,372, up from 4,729.

This figure is not considered entirely accurate as it does not account for the estimated 12,000 tourists who are staying in rented rooms and apartments, which may boost it as high as 90,000.

A similar rise is evident at Rhodes airport, where on August 10 more than 115 charter flights touched down, carrying another 20,000 tourists, comprising Germans and Britons.

The weekend was expected to see another 150 flights from abroad and more than 40 domestic flights, in view of the August 15 religious holiday.
