Sir Stelios plans the launch of easyHoliday

EasyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ionnaou is in the early stages of planning the launch of easyHoliday, an online cheap flights and hotels site.

The portal is expected to open for business late next year, according to The Sunday Telegraph.

It is being highlighted that the planned venture would bring it into competition with easyJet Holidays, a recently announced joint venture between easyJet and accommodation provider Lowcosttravelgroup to offer package holidays. As per the information available, Sir Stelios owns the rights to use the ‘easy’ brand name, but allowed easyJet to set up easyJet Holidays under a brand licensing agreement in return for receiving 0.25% of easyJet’s yearly profits. Also, under the terms of the brand licensing agreement signed with the airline last month, the entrepreneur cannot launch a competing business within a year, but will be free to do so from mid-October 2011.

For its part, easyJet recently tied up with the Low Cost Travel Group to offer packaged holiday products. The tie-up is expected to deliver £100m in the first year in sales for easyJet, and up to as much as £500m by year three. The plan, it is believed, is to attempt to convert some of the 50m people who visit easyJet’s website each year into buying not only flights but hotels and other holiday ancillary items.
