Six more operators join EUROCONTROL`s ADS-B trials

Air France, Air Mediterranee, Air One, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines and Volkswagen have joined the ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) Pioneer Airlines Project. The objective of this project, launched last year by the EUROCONTROL`s CASCADE Programme, is to help airlines to obtain airworthiness approval for their existing ADS-B equipment that will allow them to receive an ADS-B based air traffic control service.



ADS-B relies on aircraft broadcasting their identity, position (GNSS based) and velocity. This signal transmitted by the aircraft can be captured by receivers on the ground (“ADS-B out”) or in the aircraft (“ADS-B in”). The six operators join 11 others who became part of the project in 2006. In total, more than 400 aircraft are now involved, generating more than 500,000 ADS-B certified flights per year in European airspace. The aircraft will provide air navigation service providers with certified surveillance data that will allow them to bring their ADS-B ground stations to a state of operational readiness by late 2008 or early 2009.



Our close collaboration with EASA and the strong desire of these pioneers to be in the forefront of implementation are the key to the success of this project, says Alex Wandels, CASCADE Programme Manager. The project now includes a wide range of Airbus, ATR, Boeing and Dassault aircraft types and consequently helps a large part of the industry to prepare for early use of ADS-B in Europe, Australia and Canada. In the mean time EUROCONTROL, Airservices Australia, FAA and NAV CANADA are working together to define the standard to be used from 2015 onwards.



EUROCONTROL’s CASCADE programme co-ordinates the implementation of initial ADS-B applications in Europe. It performs trials, clarifies operational scenarios, drives the production of global standards and produces a safety case and a business case, paving the way for operational approval. In European airspace, implementation of “ADS-B out” is expected to start from 2008 onwards. The CASCADE programme is currently being considered as one of the potential SESAR short-term projects.
