Spotlight shines on sustainable forestry management

As we move through the United Nations’ International Year of Forests, global portal Sustainable Tourism Online (STO) highlights some of the ecological benchmarks so far achieved by some of the world’s leading environmental organisations.

Launched in 2010 by Australia’s Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC), STO is a global research hub containing hundreds of academic research papers, corporate CSR case studies, and community fact sheets sourced from all corners of the globe.

Complimented by interviews with practitioners in the field, and a forum that allows users to connect and share knowledge, the portal makes it simple to locate highly specialised information that might otherwise not be easily accessible.

STO’s most recent micro-site contains the latest forestry-related research such as Banyan Tree Global Foundation’s Greening Communities Programme, the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, the Cooperative Research Centre for Forestry, Landcare Australia, and Taj Safari’s ecotourism endeavours.

This special feature also includes links to key global forestry conferences, and video messages from Sir David Attenborough and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for biodiversity, Edward Norton.

“Tourism-funded not-for-profits such as Banyan Tree Global Foundation and Singapore’s Garden City Fund charity are setting new benchmarks in environmental conservation,” explained Portal Editor Veda Dante. “Their partnering with academics, scientists and local communities to provide funding, facilities and field expertise helps foster an environment of sustainable land management and learning.

“The International Year of Forests micro-site brings together for the first time their collective experiences, bolsters that with downloadable resources, tools and templates from environmental management leaders and presents it as a free resource for communities to access.”
