The main foyer of Manchester Central is now in the process of being demolished

As part of the convention complex’s multi-million pound redevelopment programme, the main foyer of Manchester Central (formerly G-Mex) is now in the process of being demolished to make way for a new and extended entrance. The black glass will be replaced by a stylish, flat-roofed, clear glass structure that will expose more of the original Grade II listed architecture giving impressive views of the building both internally and externally. The curtain walling will wrap around the new foyer to complement the existing Exchange Hall and Exchange Auditorium emphasising the cohesion of the venue.   As well as linking to the recently added Charter Foyer, which provides greater ease of access throughout the site, the new foyer will be larger than its predecessor and will offer a spectacular area to accommodate an independently run restaurant.

Commenting, Manchester Central’s Chief Executive, Lesley Tomlinson, said “2009 is going to be a tremendous year for Manchester Central. As we say a fond farewell to the old foyer, we are welcoming in an exciting new era for the City’s convention complex as it becomes bigger and better than ever before.”

Underlining this comment, comes the accolade from a reader poll conducted by the well-respected industry magazine Conference & Incentive Travel – Europe, that “Manchester has been named the third-best conference destination in the world.”   The city was praised for the continued investment in its conference infrastructure and is joined in the top 5 by London (1st), Barcelona (2nd), Las Vegas (4th) and Berlin/Dubai (joint 5th).

The redevelopment of Manchester Central Convention Complex has been carefully designed by award winning architects Stephenson Bell to enhance the venue’s facilities and maximise the available space to add to Manchester Central’s appeal to national and international convention, exhibition and event organisers.

Due for completion in late 2010, the redevelopment will also include additional seminar and catering facilities providing a unique conference offering in the heart of Manchester, one of Europe’s most dynamic cities.
