Around 10,000 Turkish tourists visited the northern Greek city of Kavala, in the first six months of the year, a massive increase compared to the 550 who made the trip in 1999 during the same period.

Kavala prefect Theodoros Kalliotzis attributed the boost in the number of visitors from the neighbouring country to the rapprochement between Greece and Turkey as well as Kavala`s successful participation in the EMMIT 2000, tourism fair in Istanbul.

Last year Kavala authorities allocated 105 million drachmas to the promotion of Kavala and Thassos and focused on attracting Turkish tourists from Istanbul. Bulgarian travellers, are also showing interest in visiting the town.

Efforts are being made to improve infrastructure and organise a professional training programme for local hotel staff.
