The UK should compensate Olympic Airways<.> for the damage it caused during British Airways` management of the Greek state carrier, Transport Minister Christos Verelis asserted recently. BA subsidiary Speedwing recently relinquished its role as manager of ailing OA.

Verelis noted that OA`s new board of directors would be announced within the next few days and that they would remain until the company`s international tender for new management is completed.

He said that OA could look forward to its move to the new international airport at Spata, the 2004 Games and the anticipated expansion of the Greek tourism industry. Verelis urged for a period of calm, during which OA employees should refrain from making wage and other demands.

He said the government intended to propose that the EU provide further funds for OA as the 33 billion drachmas it has provided for the firm`s transfer to Spata is insufficient.

Meanwhile, OA last week launched a new flight to Venice, the fourth city on its Italian roster. It will link Athens and Venice four times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. OA already flies to Rome, Milan and Naples.

In other news, OA has announced that smoking will be banned on all its flights from and to the US, following a directive issued by the American transport ministry. On June 18 OA will introduce another two weekly flights from Athens to New York.
