Turkish travellers are showing a great interest in visiting
According to local reports, both Greek and Turkish tourism entrepreneurs have submitted a request to the foreign ministry for the visa requirement to be withdrawn. However, for national security reasons, it does not appear the government will make such a move.
Nevertheless, it has been suggested that staff numbers be increased at Greek consulates in Ankara, Istanbul and Smyrna so that all Turkish visitors wanting to travel to eastern Aegean islands can do so.
The foreign ministry and other ministries do not approve abolishing the visa legislation as this would violate the Schengen Treaty, to which Greece is a signatory.
Furthermore, Greece must contend with the problem of illegal migrants, many of whom enter the country via Turkey.
