Vueling receives over 65,000 name proposals in just six days

Vueling has received over 65,000 ideas in its name an aircraft competition – exclusively on its website as well as Twitter and Facebook. A total 5,052 (7.7%) were logged from the airline’s English language website. The competition kicked off on July 28th through to August 2nd calling for proposed names.

Vueling fans have been invited to name five of the Barcelona-based company’s 18 incoming Airbus A320s.  These aircraft have joined the new Vueling fleet following the ratification of its merger with clickair on July 15th, so creating a 35-strong A320 fleet.

Out of a total 65,000 proposals, a list of 50 suggested Vueling names has been drafted [for the full list, see appendix]. Voting started yesterday on Vueling’s website  vueling.com/nameaviones through to  August 9th.

Voters are also also able to interact between themselves via Vueling’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.  Already, over 2,000 of them are posting online opinions.

The five most popular ideas will be painted on the livery of five Vueling aircraft. The winner of the competition, who will get to fly to Europe to see their name applied, will be announced on August 12th, when the five most voted names will be unveiled.  Anyone, regardless of whether they are a Vueling customer or not, can participate in the contest.

Vueling has taken a keen interest on social networks in order to interact more closely with the participants. The name submission has been made, not only via Vueling’s website, but also via Vueling’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Every one of the 65,000 participants who has taken part in the competition has received a €10-off voucher, just for having submitted a name.

Right from its start five years ago Vueling has turned to its passengers and employees every time it has looked for an idea to name a new aircraft. Fleet names include: «Vueldone», «Be Vueling my friend», «No Vueling, no party» or «Absolute Vueling». In addition, five aircraft were named after Vueling’s one-, two-, five- and ten-millionth passengers.

The creator of the best idea will be awarded with a visit to the hangar (in either the Netherlands, the UK or Spain, dependent on the tender’s outcome) where the clickair livery will be transformed into a Vueling one.  He or she will be able to see, first hand, the aircraft being painted with its new name.  On top of that, the winner will get five roundtrips for two people (with two overnights included in every trip) to any Vueling destination.

The four remaining winners will get a free return trip for two to any Vueling destination.

The process of re-painting clickair’s 18-strong A320 fleet will span from mid-September to mid-November, as the aircraft stop for their scheduled checks.  It is the only pending step in the process of rolling out the Vueling brand to the entire clickair fleet, whose interiors have already been 100% fitted in Vueling fashion since early July.
