Xanthi`s picturesque old town with its cobblestone streets entrances visitors. Its neoclassical buildings seem as if they want to reveal something from a glorious past. Along with the long-held customs which residents still observe at Christmas, their celebration of carnival season and the Babous festival celebrating womanhood are of particular interest.
The Thracian folkloric series of festivities, which has been running for the past 35 years, is held each year during carnival season (February 27-March 11) and includes the Xanthi carnival, concerts, theatre, traditional dance and other events.
Completing this diverse picture is the Muslim community`s cultural celebrations. The town of Pomakochoria, for instance, has its own colour and rhythm.
At night Xanthi comes alive, with its tastefully decorated bars and taverns offering fresh meats and tasty local cuisine.
For travellers who thrive on adventure, Xanthi has plenty to offer, namely canoeing or rafting down the Nestos river, archery, hiking and mountain climbing among other activities. Nature lovers can discover the virginal forests of Rodopi and the waterfalls at Livaditi while Xanthi`s mountainous areas are filled with traditional homes.
Accommodation ranges from five-star hotels to furnished studios and lodges, such as the Iniochos lodge at Komnina. The luxurious Hotel Z Palace, the only five-star hotel in the eastern Macedonia and Thrace region, is the pride of Xanthi.
