Bolsena, Italy is the best lakeside destination in Europe, Uswitch.com/mortgages can reveal. With an index score of 88.98/100, holiday makers can experience the warmest lake temperatures in Europe, averaging at 24.51°C: 23.5% warmer than Orta San Giulio lake (19.85°C). Brightened by almost 10 days (238.70 hours) of sunshine a month, Bolsena also benefits from temperatures of 27.63°C, the third highest in Europe. This is only 2.7% cooler than Italy’s Castiglione del Lago (28.4°C) in first, marking the lakeside town an optimal choice for a summer home.

Sainte-Croix-Du-Verdon places second with an index score of 83.26/100, and is the only French location in the top 10. With 98% greenspace – the most of any location analysed – the south-eastern commune offers the ultimate getaway for nature lovers. With the most sunshine hours a month (250.80), this lakeside escape is bested only by Marignane, another French commune, with 8 more hours of comfortable sunshine (258.9). Unfortunately, St Croix lake does not meet the same heated heights: the water temperature sits at only 18.83°C, 23.2% less than Bolsena (24.51°C) which comes in first place.

Another Italian town comes third: Limone Sul Garda is one of six towns in Italy to make the top 10. Placing 16th for surface temperature (21.42°C) and fifth for lake temperature (22.51°C), the popular northern Italian resort is a cooler alternative to Bolsena and Castiglione Del Lago. However, it’s perfect for those who love being surrounded by nature, as Limone Sul Garda does benefit from 91% greenspace: 7% less than Sainte-Croix-Du-Verdon leading this factor.
