Finnish travellers show increasing interest in Spain, says GTA’s TravelCube

Booking data shows that Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and France continued to be the most popular destinations in 2013. Spain and the UK enjoyed the greatest growth with double digit increases in room nights.

TravelCube, the retail brand of global travel distributor GTA, heads to MATKA the Nordic Travel Fair (16-19 January 2014) in Helsinki, Finland as 2013 data shows that Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and France continued to be the most popular destinations booked through travelcube.com in 2013. Of these, Spain and the UK enjoyed the greatest growth with double digit increases in room nights last year. This increased popularity also saw interest in France decline a little.

Kati Rautanen, GTA and TravelCube’s Business Development Manager for Finland says: “Matka is an important opportunity for GTA to promote a rich range of accommodation, services, destinations and experiences around the world to travel agents from Finland. The popularity of destinations changes every year but clearly Europe remains a popular option for the Finnish and the promise of sun, sea and sand increasingly lured them to the Balearics last year.

“With our appointment of a dedicated vice president for beach sourcing, we will be offering even more options in even more parts of the world in future.”

While the culture and historic heritage of Catalonia – Barcelona particularly – continued to attract the greatest number of bookings to Spain, increasing numbers of Finnish travellers discovered the appeals of the Balearics (Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera) in 2013. According the GTA’s data, room nights booked in the region more than trebled. Other destinations enjoying significant double digit growth in 2013 included Thailand, Hungary and Poland.

Matka Nordic Travel Fair presents the widest range of tourism options to the travel trade and general public every year. More than 1000 exhibitors from 81 countries ensure an impressive start to the tourism calendar.
