Fitness getaways key holiday trend for summer 2017

74% of Britons are considering a fitness holiday in 2017; Over half of Brits look to improve their wellbeing with an activity focused holiday; A third (33%) of Brits amp up their fitness routine on holiday.

From taking a city cycling tour to narrowing down the best hikes and surfing spots in Europe, new research proves how far Britons are going to stay fit on holiday and why fitness activities are set to become an essential part of our summer getaway.

Leading cycling retailer and manufacturer Ribble Cycles polled the nation to find out what they are looking for in a holiday this summer and can reveal that almost three quarters (74%) of Brits would consider swapping their usual holiday ventures for a fitness break.

Getting older was commonly cited as a factor for choosing an activity led vacation. Those aged 55 to 64 are most likely to make the switch (82%) from lounging by the pool to getting into the saddle, with two-thirds (67%) doing so to improve their overall fitness.

The top reason Brits are looking to go on a fitness holiday is to focus on their wellbeing (56%), followed by improving their overall fitness (55%), eating healthier (42%) and improving their mental health (42%). Parents across the UK are also swapping ice creams and sun seeking for activity focused holidays; 66% would consider taking their children on a fitness holiday this year.

The research also showed fitness breaks are a huge trend among stressed millennials, with over half (55%) of participants aged between 18 and 24 stating that their biggest motivation for going on an activity based holiday is to improve their mental health.

Research recently acknowledged that young people in the UK have the poorest mental wellbeing in the world, with only Japan falling below British millennials for levels of stress and anxiety.

When it comes to how far holidaymakers are pushing themselves to stay fit, one in three (33%) said they actually increase their fitness regime whilst on holiday and 8% admitted they go on holiday with the purpose of getting fitter in mind.

Matthew Lawson, Chief Marketing Officer at Ribble Cycles, said: “It’s really encouraging to see so many British holidaymakers and families focusing on staying fit and healthy while away on holiday.

“Getting away should be about relaxing, but it’s also a really great time to get yourself stuck into some new and challenging activities as a family. From hiring a bike on a city break in Copenhagen to scouting out the best surfing spots in Costa Rica, researching your destination can help to make sure you get the most of your time on holiday and ultimately spend some fun and quality time together!”
