Fraport expertise successfully applied over the past six years in Saudi Arabia

The German airport company Fraport AG has successfully applied at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport and Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport wide-ranging management and consulting expertise over the past six years.

Fraport AG
has completed multi-year management contracts at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport (IATA Code = JED) and Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (IATA Code = RUH) in Saudi Arabia – where the German airport company has successfully applied wide-ranging management and consulting expertise over the past six years (from mid-June 2008 to mid-June 2014) via its Fraport Saudi Arabia Ltd. subsidiary and the Frankfurt Airport home base.

During this time, traffic has grown substantially at Saudi Arabia’s two largest international aviation gateways, with JED and RUH together recording a total of almost 39 million passengers in 2013. At JED, passenger traffic jumped from 15.4 million in 2008 to 26.6 million in 2013, while cargo throughput more than doubled from 212,000 metric tons to 468,000 metric tons during the same period – confirming JED’s role as the country’s main airfreight hub. At RUH, passenger traffic climbed from 12.1 million to 19.5 million and cargo tonnage grew from 220,000 metric tons to 293,000 metric tons.

Dr. Matthias Zieschang, Fraport AG’s executive board member for finance, said: “We are proud to have applied our wide-ranging airport expertise to Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah and Riyadh gateways during the past six years – another success story in Fraport’s international business portfolio. Our know-how has been instrumental in guiding the Saudi hubs through an ambitious expansion phase, while simultaneously enabling the existing facilities to handle growing traffic and customer-service demands. Our knowledge transfer via significant training activities in Frankfurt and Saudi Arabia has not only resulted in enhanced operations but also many new contacts and lasting friendships. In the future, we look forward to seeing Jeddah and Riyadh airports evolve into full-fledged airport corporations.”

At both JED and RUH, Fraport AG delivered extensive consulting know-how to the local management, introduced operational concepts, and provided comprehensive staff training. This knowledge transfer covered the entire range of airport business and operations. In particular, Fraport provided more than 17,100 man days of consulting to local managers, about 5,300 working days via more than 150 Fraport experts on short-term assignment, and a total of about 27,500 man days of training.

Fraport management teams at JED and RUH included the positions of managing director, director finance, director operations, director commercial, and director human resources. Also, Fraport experts served as directors of maintenance and engineering at JED.

Milestones of Fraport’s consulting at Jeddah and Riyadh included: optimizing landside and airside, improving passenger services, providing customized training, and implementing retail and real estate concepts. In addition, Fraport developed “corporatization” plans for spinning off the two airports from the country’s civil aviation authority.

Since the 1970s, Fraport has been offering consulting and custom-made solutions around the globe. The scope of these activities ranges from wholly integrated service solutions – such as commissioning airport infrastructure (ORAT Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer) and optimizing operations – to airport master planning and functional design, as well as business, commercial and resource planning for airports of all sizes and traffic requirements.

Fraport’s strength in the global airport management and consulting business is based on the company’s unique integrated business model. Furthermore, Fraport draws upon the know-how and synergies of the various airports (large and small) in its global portfolio. The company has become renowned for its enviable track record in managing airports and delivering world-class services.  In short, Fraport’s expertise is increasingly in demand and travels the globe. In the summer of 2014, Fraport celebrates its 90th anniversary as an airport company – originating in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and operating on four continents worldwide.
