GBI recognized as Best Technology Investment of 2012 by CommsMEA

Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has been recognized in this year’s CommsMEA Awards as the Middle East and Africa’s best technology investment of 2012.

DUBAI – Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has been recognized in this year’s CommsMEA Awards as the Middle East and Africa’s best technology investment of 2012. The awards were hosted earlier this month in Dubai, recognizing leading telecommunications companies from across the region.

“This category focuses on organizations that made the most significant and impactful investment in technology, software, or research and development,” said CommsMEA Spokesperson. “GBI won this award for its significant investment in critical ICT infrastructure whose benefits will be felt for years to come across the region.”

“This award is truly significant to every member of GBI who worked tirelessly bringing this transformative infrastructure to life,” said Ahmed Mekky, Board Member and CEO of GBI. ”ICT infrastructure such as the GBI cable system is critical to supporting the broader development plans of the Gulf. Our network provides the capacity over which the content of the future knowledge economy can be exchanged, and the carrier-neutral business model needed to facilitate industry growth and diversification,” he added.

Between 2009 and 2012, GBI invested almost $500 million to build amongst the world’s most advanced subsea cable networks. Launched in February 2012, the network is already offering a secure and reliable backbone for regional telecommunications companies. The cable also establishes the Middle East’s first carrier-neutral operator business, and adds an additional 5-10 terabits per second of regional capacity. This new capacity equates to the rough equivalent of downloading 7,000 full-length movies per second.
