Germania moves into Hangar 1 at Erfurt-Weimar Airport

Expansion to Germania’s third maintenance hub.

BERLIN – Germania has moved into Hangar 1 at Erfurt-Weimar airport. With immediate effect, the airline's sister company, Germania Technik Brandenburg (GTB), is the sole tenant of the extensive 2600m2 property in the security zone of the airport. This comprises the hangar, with a car park and further office space. After the previous tenant used the building as a company training centre for years, the hangar is now returning to its originally designated purpose, which is for technical maintenance and workshop repairs.

"We want to develop the hangar in Erfurt into a maintenance hub, where all maintenance work for our aircraft based in Dresden, Nuremberg, and Erfurt is brought together in a compact way", said Thomas Wazinski, CTO of Germania Fluggesellschaft, at a press event for the ceremonial opening on site. "We are bringing together all technical activities at this site, which will optimise the maintenance of our fleet."

Erfurt is the third location, after Berlin and Bremen, at which Germania pools technical services in the region. This means that Erfurt provides aircraft destined for holiday regions with a set place to go for scheduled overnight checks, maintenance, and external cleaning.

In addition to this line maintenance, Germania is to construct a seat and cabin workshop. Every component inside the aircraft that is visible to passengers, like seats, lighting, carpets, and inside walls, will be cleaned and overhauled in the new workshops. Germania will be creating ten new jobs for this in the first year.

Dirk Bohms, Managing Director of GTB, said, "With this new service we can make every Germania Airbus 319 and Boeing 737-700 aircraft ready for service."

"We are hugely excited that with Germania we do not just have a reliable airline at our side, but now also a competent technical partner", said Airport Managing Director, Uwe Kotzan.

Germania has operated departures from Erfurt-Weimar since November 2012. The range of flights from the Thuringian state capital offered by the green and white airline has grown continually. Germania has based a second aircraft in Erfurt for the 2017 summer flight programme and offers a total of 13 different travel destinations from the airport. The Portuguese town of Faro is new to the schedule and the first flight to the seaside resort at the Atlantic coast starts this coming Sunday.

Non-stop to the Algarve: Germania Connects Four German Cities to Faro
From the start of the 2017 summer season, Germania will be connecting Dresden, Erfurt-Weimar, Munster/Osnabruck, and Nuremberg to the Portuguese town of Faro. Known as the ‘Gateway to the Algarve’, Faro offers a range of opportunities for a relaxing holiday to families, sunseekers, and active holidaymakers alike.

"Faro is a travel hotspot. From there you can reach the Atlantic coast, mysterious caves, great beaches, and even a cult food stall with the 'last bratwurst before America'. All in all, it's a location defined by vastness and a feeling of awe", said Claus Altenburg, Director of Sales at Germania Fluggesellschaft, at the season opening. "We are excited to develop Faro as a new destination and also recommend a trip inland."

Germania, the airline with the green and white livery, started flying twice a week from Dresden (Thursdays and Sundays) to the southern Portuguese town on the 30th March 2017. Direct flights will be offered from Erfurt-Weimar starting in April and from Nuremburg starting in May on Thursdays and Sundays. Monday flights from Munster/Osnabruck to the Algarve will start in May, while a second connection on Thursdays will be added in mid-June.

There are more than 100 amazing beaches along the southern Portuguese coast, which is both diverse and beautiful. The west of the region is renowned for its high waves, which attract experienced surfers. Active holidaymakers are enticed by the numerous hiking trails and cycle tracks. Families enjoy the beaches in the east of the region, which are sheltered from the wind. Golfers are also well catered for in south Portugal.
