Greek kickstarter tourist trail launches

The funding will go towards the first expedition in March 2015. Backers rewards include world class limited edition photography, maps and guidebooks. Greek Groves is seeking angel investors for future tourism activities.

Greek bankers should throw out the worry beads and look out the window. It may sound a bit Zen, but money really could grow on olive trees. As much as £80 billion, according to a Kickstarter project called “Greek Groves“.

This travel conservation project started in 2005, by journalist and consultant June Field, aims to use the latest mapping technology to preserve the ancient olive groves by putting a price on each and every one.

“These immortal trees are a vital asset to Greece’s tourism, environment and economy” says June.“That’s why we are declaring every tree over 500 years old as a ‘protected national monument. Like California’s Redwoods they are the symbolic soul of Western culture” she adds.

Starting with the island of Crete, new agrotourism trails called ‘Olive Routes’ are under way which aim to showcase Greece’s rural lifestyle – surrounding the ancient olive trees. Crete’s 360km Olive Route starts in Chania Market, leading drivers or cyclists into the hinterland of The White Mountains to the south coast idyll of Sougia. It takes in Minoan sites such as Phaestos and Gortyn – detouring via gastro food territory of Messara Plain and Mt Psiloritis National Park. Winding through the bucolic Amari Valley past character villages, it ends back at Chania’s Venetian port. Needless to say, the map features the most scenic paths, outstanding tavernas and most comfortable farmstays to sleep off the day’s adventures. Pitstops for the local hooch are obligatory.
