Villages, towns and cities across the UK have some pretty unique names, but with some places sharing their names with other world famous destinations, how well do we actually know our British Isles?
To find out, loveholidays surveyed 2,000 people across the UK, asking them which world destinations they think share their name with UK locations.
The data revealed just how well people know the British Isles, and more specifically, if they know of uniquely named locations near their hometown.
Overall, the survey showed that the UK knows the most about Boston, with 45% of those surveyed accurately identifying the market town in Lincolnshire that shares its name with the American city.
The second most identifiable locations were Kingston and Christchurch, with 44% saying they knew of both the places in the UK named after the far-flung locations in Jamaica and Barbados.
People were least aware they could find an Egypt or Barcelona in the UK, with only 3% suggesting these destinations share names with UK towns and villages.
The data also showed that in Scotland, just 13% of people know that there is a hamlet called Moscow hidden away in East Ayrshire. However, 61% of Scots knew that there is a Scottish Perth.
The data also revealed that Scots who hail from Glasgow are more up to date with their geography. 24% of Glaswegians are aware of Scottish Moscow, compared to just 6% of those from Edinburgh.
The East Midlands countryside might not resemble NYC, but residents still know about their local big apple, with 27% saying they knew about the tiny hamlet of New York in Lincolnshire.
The data also revealed that over half (58%) of EM residents knew that a town shares its name with the US city of Boston, and over a third (36%) knew of the East Midlands’ Melbourne.
The South East is home to its very own California, in Buckinghamshire. But, did nearby residents know the UK’s version of the sunny state was just a short drive away?
Just 7% of South East residents knew that there was a California in the local area, so perhaps it’s time to get exploring as restrictions ease! However, 5% of residents knew that the South East was also home to locations that share their names with Egypt or New Zealand.
The South East isn’t the only region with its own California. The North East is also home to a hamlet that shares its name with the US state, but the data revealed that only 17% of NE residents knew about it.
However, over half (57%) of NE residents knew about a town in their area that also shares its name with a US state, Washington. The data also showed that 16% know of the local Toronto but just 5% knew of their local Columbia.
Barely anyone (2%) in the South West knew of the hamlet, Barcelona near Cornwall. However, over a fifth of residents (28%) knew of Bridgetown in Cornwall, the hamlet that shares its name with the capital of Barbados.
The Bermuda Islands are home to pink sandy beaches and sunny skies, a stark comparison to the English countryside. However, there is also a hamlet named Bermuda in the West Midlands, but only 3% of WM residents knew about it!
The West Midlands is also home to its very own Florence, although it’s home to considerably fewer art galleries and museums. But, the data revealed that only 2% of WM residents knew about this location.
Not everyone is as up to date on their geography of the British Isles. Some of those who were surveyed did not know any of these locations, with 15% of people saying so.
In fact, surprisingly 3% said that none of the listed locations in the survey shared a name with anywhere in the UK.
