How well does the UK really know Europe?

A recent survey by Insurance4carhire tested the UK’s knowledge of mainland Europe, with results showing we know surprisingly little about our continental neighbour.

Holidaymakers are excited about travelling again when the lockdown is over and will be more appreciative of travel, not taking it for granted in future, according to new data.

And, while travelling around Europe isn’t possible at the moment, improving our knowledge of travel destinations still is. A recent survey by Insurance4carhire tested the UK’s knowledge of mainland Europe, with results showing we know surprisingly little about our continental neighbour.

Key insights revealed by the survey are:

  • Less than 10% of those surveyed have been able to get every question correct
  • Baby Boomers got the best scores with an average of 69%
  • Generation Z in comparison had an average score of 47%, the lowest of all age groups
  • The Scottish know the most about Europe with an average score of 64.7%

The survey asked respondents six continental Europe knowledge questions, from what city is home to the Colosseum to what the Gare Du Nord is in Paris.

  • 69% of respondents correctly identified the Gare Du Nord as a train station, 31% claimed it was something else – most commonly an art gallery
  • 15% of people couldn’t name the correct city the Colosseum resides in, with 3% thinking it’s in Germany
  • 31% of respondents couldn’t correctly identify Zurich as the largest city in Switzerland

The UK's passion for travelling mainland Europe
On average, respondents had visited mainland Europe (for work or a holiday) 6.61 times in their lifetime. Of those who have been to mainland Europe, 22% have visited 1-3 countries, 26% have been to 4-5 countries, 30% have visited 6-9 countries and 22% have been to 10 or more.

Insurnace4carhire expanded on the questions and created a quiz for those eager to put their knowledge to the test.
