World’s largest B Corp adventure travel company launches multi-day domestic tours purposed for travelers to sustainably explore their home country, while supporting local communities and businesses.
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Intrepid Travel launched 16 domestic multi-day tours for American travelers eager to explore their home country, focusing on creating connection, supporting sustainable businesses and reducing travelers’ environmental impact.
Departing in May 2021 the new trips speak to the importance of local-led travel to support and empower communities and locales across the country.
The tours are designed to be more immersive than sightseeing, embedding sustainable experiences across the range in partnership with Indigenous guides, operators and fellow B Corporations. Highlights include sharing a meal with an Indigenous Navajo family surrounding Zion National Park, supporting B Corp businesses and climate action champions like Hog Island Oyster shucking in Sonoma, and redefining the “Great American Road Trip” on a two-wheel journey through states like Maine, which supports the business’s stance on climate action as a carbon neutral business since 2010, now the world’s first and only tour operator with science-based targets for carbon reduction.
“In past years, our North American tours appealed to international travelers who wanted to explore a new country. During the pandemic, we had the opportunity to design domestic tours for American travelers, an entirely new business venture,” said Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel’s managing director in North America. “Bringing Intrepid’s style of travel to America for American travelers means we can appropriately honor and support Indigenous experiences, support local businesses that are pursuing sustainable practices and offer an entirely carbon-offset style of travel, including redefining an American road trip from four to two wheels on our Cycling tours.”
Since January, Intrepid Travel has noted nearly 45 percent MoM increase in its website traffic to local tours from Americans, while the initial departures of its Zion Ranch and Alaska tours sold-out, prompting additional departures.
Here’s a taste of what travelers can expect on the new tours:
- Zion Ranch Stay (four days). On this tour, surround yourself with nature as you hike Zion National Park and Bryce National Park – with views of canyon walls and red sandstone cliffs – led by a local Navajo guide. Over a family-style, traditional meal with a Navajo family, hear about their history arriving in the Southwest between 800 to 1,000 years ago, and how their history is imperative to present-day America.
- New Mexico Discovery (six days). Travelers will learn how local art, culture and cuisine have been shaped by Indigenous American and Spanish influences from Santa Fe to Taos. Browse Native American art markets and visit 11,000-year-old ruins to uncover the rich history and ancestral heritage of the US Southwest. You’ll have the option to check-out fellow B-Corp business Meow Wolf, which creates fantastical, immersive experiences including art installations and extended reality content.
- Cycle Maine and Acadia National Park (six days). Get into nature on a cycling tour across Maine. One of the nation’s most-beloved National Parks and the first park east of the Mississippi, Acadia National Park is best enjoyed by cycling the rugged terrain; enjoy viewpoints from Thunder Hole, Jordan Pond and Eagle Lake, before returning downhill to charming Bar Harbor.
The domestic tours in The United States will add to the business’s collection of over 70 domestic tours created from inception to departure during the pandemic, first launching in Europe and Australia, respectively. The collection of domestic tours is part of Intrepid Travel’s reimagined businesses during the global pandemic: Bringing its style of travel closer to travelers’ homes – to empower and support local people and businesses – and continuing to put sustainability at the forefront of travel’s rebound, including announcing last year that it’s the first and only tour operator with carbon reduction verification from Science-Based Targets (SBTi) as an already carbon-neutral business since 2010, and open-sourcing its Decarbonization Guide and Animal Welfare Toolkit for other travel businesses.
