Jet2.com and Jet2holidays take off to Athens for the first time

Inaugural flights departed from Manchester and Birmingham Airports marking the first time the company has operated to the famous ancient city.

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays launched their first flight to Athens on 14th April from two of the companies UK bases – Manchester and Birmingham Airports. Customers on the flights received a special welcome when they touched down in the capital of Greece, with special cakes, sweet treats and celebrations including a ribbon bonding to celebrate the connection between Athens and both UK cities.

The busy flights marked the start of the leading leisure airline and city break specialist operating to Athens, with two weekly services (Thursday and Sunday) available from Manchester and Birmingham Airports until the end of October.

When travelling to Athens, customers can choose from a flight-only with leading leisure airline, Jet2.com, or a package option with Jet2CityBreaks available for a low £60 per person deposit. Package options with Jet2CityBreaks include flights with Jet2.com including 22kg free hold luggage and 10kg of free cabin baggage, transfers to and from the airport, as well as a choice of hotels in the best locations.

Greece’s capital, Athens, is the beating heart of Ancient Greece and holidaymakers can go history hunting, be stunned by world-renowned sights such as the Acropolis, or enjoy the fantastic nightlife. Jet2CityBreaks has a range of 3-5* hotels available in Athens City, in neighbourhoods such as Koukaki, Monastiraki and Plaka. These locations provide easy access to the best sites, whether that be the flea market in Monastiraki, the nightlife in Psiri, the ‘Old Town’ of Plaka, the world-famous Acropolis or Syntagma Square.

The start of flights and city breaks to Athens comes in direct response from British holidaymakers but also gives locals fantastic access to the city of Manchester and the North West of England, as well as Birmingham and the Midlands region.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: “As the UK’s leading airline and tour operator to Greece, we are delighted to see our first flights take off to Athens from two of our UK bases today, as we know there is great demand from customers for flights and city breaks to the historic city. With international travel returning to normality, we are looking forward to our biggest and busiest ever summer in Greece, including the launch of flights and city breaks to Athens. We are looking forward to a fantastic summer and beyond as Greece continues to be right at the heart of our ongoing growth and success strategy.”

Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director, Communications & Marketing, Athens International Airport S.A., said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Jet2.com’s first flights to Athens International Airport today, signifying the airline’s spectacular “premiere” in the Athens market, and we would like to sincerely thank the airline for their “vote of trust.” The UK is one of our most important markets, and we are absolutely certain that not only will our vibrant city meet but it will even surpass the
