‘Local Pub’ tops charts as home comfort UK cruisers miss most at sea

New research from an independent online cruise travel agency has found that the ‘local pub’ was cited by UK cruisers as the thing they miss the most whilst at sea; shortly followed by ‘driving’ and the local takeaway' in second and third place respectively.

UNITED KINGDOM – In a bid to discover more about the UK cruisers’ travel habits and how they feel about leaving their home comforts when going to sea, an independent online cruise travel agency has taken a closer look at what Britons miss the most when abroad, in a new study.

Bonvoyage.co.uk polled 1,264 UK cruisers who have been on a cruise for at least two weeks in the last 5 years, and initially asked them “Did you miss anything from home (hobbies, habits or home comforts) when you were on a cruise?” to which 44% said ‘yes’.

These respondents were then asked to explain what exactly they missed the most when away from home. The respondents were able to choose multiple answers if applicable.

According to the research, the top 10 things that UK cruisers miss the most whilst at sea were as follows:

  1. Local pub                             76%
  2. Driving                                 61%
  3. Local takeaway                      54%
  4. TV soaps                              51%
  5. Pet                                       46%
  6. Roast dinners                        38%
  7. Watching team play (sport)     31%
  8. Own bed                               29%
  9. Job                                       22%
  10. Cooking                                17%

However, just under a third, 31%, of the respondents who claimed to miss aspects of their daily routine when at sea also claimed that they wouldn’t want to have these things ‘available/ accessible on the ship’. Of these, the majority, 83%, mentioned the fact that it is ‘nice’ to get away from it.

Steph Curtin, Cruise Development Manager of bonvoyage.co.uk, had the following to say:

“The best thing about travelling, particularly cruising, is the fact that you can discover something new every day in a different port; you simply don’t have time to get bored! Whether it’s the food, the culture, the landscapes or even the climate, all of your usual daily habits and routines can disappear; allowing you to take part into something completely different.”

She continued: “I am not surprised to see that local pubs top the chart for what Britons miss the most whilst being at sea; they clearly hold a very special place in our hearts as a nation! Most cruise liners are equipped with a huge variety of fantastic restaurants, bars and even pubs though, so you needn’t go far to find your home comforts whilst at sea.”
