The number of scheduled and charter flights from Russia and Ukraine to Israel is expected to rise sharply in 2006. Foreign and Israeli airlines plan to operate 51 scheduled flights weekly from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Odessa, Dniepropetrovsk and Chernovic.

Eilat and Tel Aviv-bound charter flights from these and the new gateways of Lvov, Kharkov, Irkutsk and Novosibirsk are expected to quadruple thanks to an Israeli Tourism Ministry program to stimulate such flights.

The increase in the number of flights means an additional 62,000 seats on scheduled flights and 67,000 more seats on charters from the Ukraine and Russia.

Israel`s Tourism Minister Avraham Hirchson said, We hope to welcome 300,000 Russian and Ukrainian tourists in 2006, and are working to shorten visa processing times using an Internet-based system.

Russia and the Ukraine are promising markets for Israeli tourism, say ministry officials. In light of the anticipated increase in the number of flights and the rising numbers of Russian and Ukrainian tourists visiting Israel, a broad marketing campaign is planned for the two countries. In the next month, Israel will also open a tourism office in Kiev.

In 2005, approximately 93,000 Russian and Ukrainian tourists entered Israel, 16 per cent more than in 2004.
