A team of 12 meeting and incentive travel professionals from the UK visited the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) and were given an extensive tour of its facilities and the state-of-the-art Dubai International Convention Centre (DICC).

Dubai is already a preferred destination for the UK meetings and incentive planners and the DICC offers the facilities and services to rival the best convention centres in the world further adding to the emirate`s appeal, remarked DWTC Assistant General Manager (Acting), Abdulla T. Qassem. We seek to capitalise on the emirate`s strong performance in the UK market to develop it further and attract a greater share, Mr. Qassem stressed.

The group is in Dubai on a familiarisation trip at the invitation of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) to examine new developments in the region and explore the emirate`s attractiveness as a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) destination.

Mr. Qassem noted that the UK was one of Dubai`s primary travel origin markets from Western Europe. Dubai is ideally suited to match the needs of the meetings and incentive travel organisers` model profile of somewhere new and different that combines exotic experiences and excitement with professional destination management services and top quality hotels and blends the comforts of the western world with the adventure of Arabia, he said.

The DICC has been designed to provide a much-needed boost to Dubai`s status as a destination for the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) business in the emirate. The DICC will be large enough to accommodate events with up to 12,000 delegates and its main multipurpose hall will have the capacity to hold up to 4,500 people when set as an auditorium.

The flexibility of the new multipurpose hall, one of the key highlights of this facility, created a major impact on the visiting group. They were given a demonstration of the adjustable walls and retractable seating that can be configured in an endless array to accommodate any event – social or cultural to world-class sporting championship games or tournaments such as tennis or basketball.

The hall is also ideal for the entertainment industry that can use its high-tech facilities to stage specialised concerts, ranging from jazz and classical to pop. With the meetings and incentive travel industry worldwide constantly on the lookout for new and interesting alternatives to the tried and trusted destinations, familiarisation trips like this one by the UK team play an effective role in promoting Dubai and the DICC.
