Mixed messaging on COVID relief drives confusion and slows economic recovery

Rebuilding traveler confidence key to saving the economy, but passing COVID-relief legislation is necessary step.

WASHINGTON, DC – Following President Trump’s announcement that there would be no COVID-relief legislation until after the election, he later tweeted he would be willing to sign a stand-alone bill for stimulus checks. Mixed messages are causing confusion for the marketplace and the global economy. Mike McCormick, co-founder of Travel Again issued the following statement in response:

“President Trump's announcement that no additional COVID-relief legislation will be passed before the election dealt yet another devastating blow to the travel industry. His message later that day reconsidering the issue only adds to the confusion. But what is very clear is that in order to strengthen the economy, we must get the travel industry back on its feet. The travel industry has always been a major driver of economic growth and jobs.

Travel is not a political issue; it does not advance one particular party over the other. It is simply what is needed to strengthen our global economy. We must restore consumer and corporate confidence in traveling and encourage responsible government policy globally. In the near-term here in the United States, Congress and the Trump Administration must act now to pass continued financial relief to keep essential airline operations in place, provide needed bridge financing to keep hotels open and keep the remainder of the needed travel infrastructure out of foreclosure.

As a next step, the U.S. travel industry must coordinate, focus and prioritize its recovery efforts in a way unlike we have ever accomplished before. Every policy, process and business practice must be implemented with this one thing in mind: restoring traveler confidence.

It will take the highest level of cooperation among health experts, TSA, CBP, airports, hotels, ground transportation, travel agencies, cruise lines and every other travel-related entity. But if losing 85-90% of our overall travel bookings isn’t motivating enough, I don’t know what is.

Collectively, we have the power to not only navigate through the pre-recovery period until effective COVID-19 vaccines can be distributed, but then accelerate through the economic recovery curve afterwards.”
