More choice, more variety and more local routes for Southern sun seekers

Thomson and First Choice to introduce additional Palma, Majorca route for summer 2016.

Thomson and First Choice announced that in summer 2016 they will introduce an additional flight to Palma, Majorca from Southampton Airport on a Tuesday, making cruises on board the Thomson Majesty available to customers from the south coast.

The move to introduce the route is part of the UK’s leading holiday company’s strategy to ensure customers across the UK can fly from their local airport to experience great cruise itineraries and stay at the best hotels in some of the most exciting destinations. The new route is now on sale.

Customers travelling from Southampton during summer 2016 will now be able to take advantage of Thomson Cruises’ summer 2016 programme with fresh itineraries exploring the Western Mediterranean on Thomson Majesty. Also new for cruise enthusiasts departing from Southampton is the chance to experience itineraries on the latest addition to the Thomson Cruises fleet, to be named Thomson Discovery. The existing Thomson Airways flight on a Saturday from Southampton allows direct access to the ship’s home port for next summer.

Thomson Majesty in the Western Med
Based in Palma for summer 2016, Thomson Majesty will be exploring the Western Mediterranean, with the introduction of evening stays in Ibiza and Barcelona on the Catalan Promise itinerary. This itinerary, with no sea days, builds on the promise of maximising customers’ time ashore and with the late evening stays allows for a leisurely dinner and the chance to soak up the post-sunset atmosphere. Huelva (for Seville) in Spain and Mahon in Menorca are new additions to the line-up on the Moorish Delights and Treasures of the Mediterranean itineraries respectively. Thomson Cruises will be offering people from the South a chance to join the ship with the introduction of new weekly flights from Southampton Airport to Palma for the Tuesday sailings.

Introducing Thomson Discovery
New for summer 2016, following the recent announcement of the acquisition of a new addition to its fleet, customers can now book to sail on Thomson Discovery. Currently sailing as Royal Caribbean International’s Splendour of the Seas, the ship will be based in Palma for summer 2016 following a re-branding and refurbishment programme. The latest addition to the Thomson fleet will have a capacity of 1,830 (double occupancy) across 915 cabins, and, nearly 40 per cent with balconies. The family-friendly ship boasts an outdoor movie screen, rock climbing wall, nine hole mini golf course and extensive dining choices with three a la carte restaurants and eight bars and lounges. The ship’s itineraries – Highlights of the Mediterranean, Cosmopolitan Classics, Mediterranean Secrets and Magic of Spain – will take in some of the most popular European spots. These include Livorno in Italy (for Florence and Pisa), Villefranche in France (for Monaco and Nice) and Barcelona and Cadiz (for Seville) in Spain. Customers, particularly families, will be able to make the most of the programme with Saturday sailings and flights from Southampton Airport.

Karen Switzer, Director of Aviation Planning for Thomson and First Choice, said of the move: “Adding an extra flight to Majorca from Southampton demonstrates our commitment to the airport and the local area. It’s great that we will now be able to give local customers the chance to take advantage of fabulous new itineraries on board the Thomson Majesty with the new Tuesday flight as well as the chance to explore the Mediterranean on our exciting new ship – the Thomson Discovery, using our existing Saturday flight. We know that the extra weekly flight will be well received and we’re excited to extend our cruise offering by making it easily accessible for those living in the Southampton airport area.”

“Expanding access to our portfolio of destinations and hotels is a key part of our overall strategy and we hope that this move will enhance the holiday experience for our customers.”

Dave Lees, Managing Director of Southampton Airport, added: “We are delighted that Thomson and First Choice are doubling their programme at Southampton Airport for summer 2016. Their range of hotels and cruise products in the Mediterranean will be very popular with people from this region who choose to use their favourite local airport.”
