Number of UK 'silver surfers' trying their hand at travel dating rises by 2,530% in 12 months

The figures show that a total of 2,630 UK travellers aged between 45-64 had an active membership with TourBar in January 2016 compared to just 100 in January 2015. The research reveals that the biggest growth in membership in this age category also occurred in October 2015 when membership rose by 250% compared to figures in September 2015.

The number of ‘silver surfers’ in the UK trying their hand at travel dating has risen by 2,530% in the past 12 months, according to leading travel dating app tourbar.com. The figures show that a total of 2,630 UK travellers aged between 45-64 had an active membership with TourBar in January 2016 compared to just 100 in January 2015.

For those aged between 45-54, there are now 2,000 active members from the UK in this age category with the majority of the members (75%) being male. The research reveals that the biggest growth in membership in this age category also occurred in October 2015 when membership rose by 250% compared to figures in September 2015. Teenage children leaving home for the start of the university term is thought to be one of the reasons behind the rapid rise in membership as ‘empty-nesters’ look to fulfil life-long travel dreams once their off-spring have flown the nest.

TourBar is a social networking platform whereby solo travellers register their upcoming travel plans in order to meet with a fellow solo traveller with similar interests. Alternatively, members can register as a guide whereby they tour solo travellers visiting their home city alone as an authentic way to get to know a destination.

When it comes to the oldest of TourBar’s membership categories in the 55-64-year-old bracket, there are now 630 UK members registered with 79% being male members.

TourBar’s Public Relations Manager, Anastasia Zolotova, added: “Over the past year we have seen the popularity of TourBar rise across all of our age categories, which is very exciting. It is encouraging to see the rise in membership levels across our two older age brackets as solo travellers aged over 45 grow increasingly confident with trying new methods to meet companions.”
