Oceanwide Expeditions launches new vessel, m/v Janssonius

New ship represents unshaken optimism for Oceanwide Expeditions.

Dutch polar travel company Oceanwide Expeditions celebrates the ship launch of its new Polar Class 6 vessel, m/v Janssonius, from Brodosplit Shipyards in Split, Croatia.

Built similar to its last vessel, m/v Hondius, the new Janssonius represents one of the most technologically advanced, structurally fortified expedition cruise vessels on the planet.

“We are very pleased to welcome a vessel similar to Hondius,” said Oceanwide CEO Michel van Gessel. “Hondius has performed outstandingly in the polar regions, and we are looking forward to offering identical services and quality exploratory voyages with Janssonius in the Arctic and Antarctica.”

Janssonius is custom-designed for polar travel, maximizing safety and speed while minimizing environmental impact. Using LED lighting, bio-degradable paints and lubricants, and steam heat, she is also equipped with flexible power management systems that keep fuel consumption and CO2 levels low.

Despite the constraints that Covid-19 has put on the travel market, Oceanwide offers Janssonius as proof that the company is still robust and optimistic about the future of polar cruising. Due in part to its recent investment from Bolster Investment Partners, Oceanwide continues to plan itineraries, book trips, and build vessels that spearhead the latest advancements in expedition travel.

Janssonius was named after 17th-century Dutch cartographer Jan Janssonius, son-in-law of Flemish cartographer Jodocus Hondius, after whom Hondius was named. The new vessel will be completed and ready to begin her first Antarctic season this November.
