One in three proposals for UK couples happen on holiday abroad

VoucherCodesPro.co.uk conducted the research after noticing a spike in searches for terms and discounts relating to engagement rings and weddings. When asked ‘Were you on holiday abroad when you proposed to your partner?’ 32% of respondents said ‘yes’.

New research by a money saving website in the UK has revealed that as many as one third of marriage proposals amongst British couples occur on holiday abroad; with the majority stating that a holiday location was selected because it offered a ‘more special setting’. According to the poll, 52% of Britons get engaged on a special date or public holiday, with Christmas Day being the most popular day to get engaged on.

A new poll by a money saving website in the UK has revealed that as many as one third of Britons that get engaged do so whilst on holiday abroad, whilst 52% of couples get engaged on a public holiday or special date such as an anniversary, Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve.

VoucherCodesPro.co.uk conducted the research after noticing a spike in searches for terms and discounts relating to engagement rings and weddings. 1,773 people aged 18 and over from around the UK, all of whom were engaged and had been the one to propose to their partner, were quizzed about their proposals.

When asked ‘Were you on holiday abroad when you proposed to your partner?’ 32% of respondents said ‘yes’. When asked why they made the decision to propose to their partner whilst on holiday, and told to select all that applied from a list, the top 5 results were as follows:

1. Offered a more special/memorable setting – 61%
2. Didn’t want the weather to ruin it – 54%
3. Added element of surprise – 31%
4. Didn’t want friends and family interfering – 22%
5. We are happiest when on holiday – 18%

According to the poll, the most common destination for proposals on holiday is France (25%), closely followed by Turkey (21%) and Italy (19%).

When asked if they had proposed to their partner on a public holiday or special date, 52% of respondents said ‘yes’. These respondents were then asked which public holiday or special date they had become engaged on and the top three results were Christmas Day (21%), Valentine’s Day (18%) and New Year’s Eve (17%).

George Charles, spokesperson for VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, said the following: “I’m not surprised to hear that as many as one third of proposals happen abroad – particularly with the weather we have here in the UK. However, whilst destinations abroad may provide a romantic setting for a proposal, there are some absolutely fantastic destinations within the UK that are ideal settings for a proposal. Unfortunately many Britons don’t do their research into romantic destinations within the UK, with holidays abroad being the first thing that pops into their heads.

“What I like though is that 48% of Britons don’t get engaged on a public holiday or special date – surely it’s more of a surprise if it’s not on a date in the calendar when hundreds of other people will be thinking of popping the same question to their partner?”.
