President and CEO of Visit Oakland appointed first Oakland Representative to U.S. Travel Association Board of Directors

OAKLAND, CA. – Peter Gamez, President and CEO of Visit Oakland – the city’s official destination marketing organization (DMO) has been appointed the first Oakland representative to the U.S. Travel Association Board of Directors.

Gamez joined Visit Oakland as President and CEO in August 2021. He is responsible for leading and managing daily operations for Visit Oakland and its mission to brand, market, and sell Oakland as a must-experience destination. Through strategic sales and marketing initiatives, partnership development and media outreach – Gamez and his team strengthen the local economy by increasing travel to Oakland. A travel industry leader, Gamez brings vision of recovery and optimism in reshaping Oakland’s tourism economy.

Now, as a member of U.S. Travel’s Board of Directors, Gamez will participate in recovery on a national level. The U.S. Travel Board of Directors is the governing body of the U.S. Travel Association. The Board guides the organization’s direction, approves its budget, addresses industry-wide issues and serves as a liaison and voice for all members.

The U.S. Travel Association, based in Washington, D.C., is the national, non-profit organization representing all components of the travel industry. In 2020, travel generated $1.5 trillion in economic output and supported 11 million jobs. U.S. Travel’s mission is to increase travel to and within the United States by promoting priorities and programs that facilitate travel’s growth. The association also produces research in the form of travel data, analysis and insights to keep the industry and lawmakers well informed.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in a Cuban-American family, Gamez holds a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Communications from San Francisco State University. He serves on the Economic Workforce Committee for the City of Oakland, is an active CEO with Visit California, and serves on the boards for both the California Travel Association and U.S. Travel Association. He is a member of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Bay Area and Los Angeles Business Travel Associations, and The Battery social club.
