LONDON – WTM 2013 – REPORT: The feel-good effects of the London 2012 Olympics look set to extend to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, reveals the World Travel Market 2013 Industry Report.

Senior travel and tourism industry executives attending World Travel Market, which takes place in London this week, say they are more likely to sell holidays to the Rio Games due to the success of London 2012.

Almost four out of ten (39%), of the 1,277 senior industry executives polled, say they are more likely to sell holidays coinciding with the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics as a result of the 2012 event. Furthermore, 26% of those questioned say they would do so, regardless of the success of the 2014 World Cup which is also scheduled to be held in Brazil.

Furthermore, almost a quarter (18%) of UK 2013 holidaymakers are more likely to attend the Rio Games following the success of London 2012 – which is a high percentage as only 155,448 Brits travelled to Brazil in 2012.

The same survey also revealed the positive impact the 2012 Olympics have had on both London and the UK. Following the games 64% of respondents said they had seen more interest in London as a tourist attraction while 54% said they had seen more interest in the UK following the games. As a result 52% of travel firms around the world have increased their capacity in London while 42% have grown capacity in the UK.

Reed Travel Exhibitions, Exhibition Director, World Travel Market, Simon Press said: “It’s great to see the success of London already having an impact on the 2016 Olympics and we wish Rio de Janeiro all the best in its hosting of the event.

“Brazil has great inbound tourism potential and the World Travel Market 2013 Industry Report’s findings show the 2016 Olympics, alongside the 2014 football World Cup, will help to attract more people to the South American country.”
