San Basilio De Palenque in Colombia, opens its forst tourist office

San Basilio De Palenque has officially opened its first tourist office in a bid to attract more tourism business to the area.

The iconic Afro-Colombian town San Basilio De Palenque is in the north of Colombia on the Colombian Caribbean Coast and is one hour from the city of Cartagena. Its inhabitants live guided by African customs, traditions and rites, just as their ancestors did several centuries ago and the town is famous for Palenqueras, dark-skinned women who, dressed in multi-coloured dresses and swaying their hips, walk while they balance bowls of fresh fruit on their heads.

The town for years has been on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a nomination established to ensure better protection and raising awareness of cultural heritages worldwide.

Colombia’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Tourism, Sergio Diaz-Granados, officially opened the tourist office.

Speaking at the opening he said: “The originality that Palenque has is necessary for Colombian tourism to continue growing,” “Palenque,” the Minister added, “offers a unique experience and is a part of Colombia’s ‘magical realism’.”

According to Diaz-Granados, the Afro-Colombian town’s tourist centre will remind people that: “Colombia is the Latin American country with the highest Afro-descendent population and African heritage”.

Palenque’s tourist centre is the result of a joint investment from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism and the Government of Bolivar.
