Sharjah unveils 9th Tourist Guides Training Course

Al Midfa: Tourist guides play key role in building image and tourist perception of destination.

SHARJAH – The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority in cooperation with University of Sharjah has announced the 9th batch of Professional Tourist Guides Course as part of the Authority’s efforts to bolster the tourism sector in the emirate and improve the quality of professional services and facilities offered to visiting tourists. The 11-day licensing course, to be held from June 16 to 27, includes both theory and practical lessons by the University of Sharjah faculty and professional experts besides field visits to a number of tourist attractions and cultural and tourism landmarks in the emirate.

Announcing the 9th batch of Professional Tourist Guides course, HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Director General, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority underscored the importance of the SCTDA initiative aimed at encouraging excellence and training and honing skills of tourism industry partners, introducing them to the latest developments in the tourism experience of the emirate, in accordance with highest international standards and advances made in the global travel and tourism industry.

Al Midfa said that Sharjah’s identity and tourism industry are defined by its rich heritage and cultural legacy. This has been put in the spotlight once again with preparations for various cultural events celebrating Sharjah as the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014, as declared by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The celebrations are expected to attract large numbers of international tourists and visitors, demanding greater responsibility by the tourism industry partners to highlight and present the emirate’s image in right perspective, added Al Midfa stressing the critical role tourist guides play in evolving the image and tourist perceptions of a destination.

The SCTDA Director General said that the professional licensing and training program of the tourist guides, which was launched by the Authority four years ago has been a huge success and has received huge response from enthusiastic tourism industry professionals and partners. Over the past 4 years, more than 100 tourist guides have successfully been trained and granted licenses in cooperation with the University of Sharjah.

The professional training and licensing tourist guides course includes lessons and lectures on the various facets of Sharjah’s history, culture, architecture, archaeology and the economy. Field visits to a number of museums, tourist sites and archaeological sites and backgrounders on future tourism projects, such as the Heart of Sharjah and Heritage Village in Al Khan area etc form part of the course.
