Snow storm Nemo cancelled thousand of flights in the US

Thousands of people across large swathes of the north-eastern United States and eastern Canada are battling to clean up after a huge snowstorm.

Boston’s Logan International Airport and the three airports serving New York City have gradually resumed their services after more than 5,000 flights were cancelled on Saturday. Flights also resumed at other hard-hit airports in the region, including in Providence, Hartford and others.

According to USA Today, flight schedules resumed today at airports in New York and New England, a hopeful sign for air travelers after as many as 6,600 flights were canceled since Thursday.

At least some flights had resumed this morning at all three of the big New York City-area airports, with schedules expected to ramp up throughout the day. Near-normal operations could return by Monday.

Flights also began to fly again in Boston and New England, where the storm’s impact was more severe.

Two flight-tracking services put the number of canceled flights well into the thousands since the storm – dubbed Nemo by The Weather Channel – first began affecting flights in the Midwest on Thursday.

According to Associated Press, FlightStats counted 6,600 cancellations since that time while rival firm FlightAware tallied a lower number of about, 5,800 during that time. It was not immediately clear about what led to the discrepancy between the two counts.

Despite the spike in cancellations, most airlines said they did not expect to see a long backlog of passengers as flights resume.

The storm hit during a week in a typically slow travel time of the year, and several carriers tell Today in the Sky that many passengers either moved their trips to avoid the storm or canceled their flights altogether.

Airports with the most combined arrival and departure cancellations on Saturday, February 9th are:

  • 499 (BOS) Logan International Airport
  • 337 (JFK) John F. Kennedy International Airport
  • 323 (EWR) Newark Liberty International Airport
  • 315 (LGA) LaGuardia Airport
  • 170 (YYZ) Pearson International Airport
  • 167 (PHL) Philadelphia International Airport
  • 112 (ORD) O’Hare International Airport
