Spain and Greece are lauded as Best Value Eurozone Hot Spots

The Post Office Barometer revealed that in Greece, where room rates are down 40% year on year, holiday spending costs were also down 11% with holiday makers able to purchase the eight essential items for £57.50.

Spain has for the first time topped the most recent Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer as the best value destination for holiday spending in 2013 with resort costs down 36% year on year; it was also announced that room rates in Greece had fallen by 40% in the last year. The experts at online travel agent loveholidays.com have selected some of their best value holiday deals in the two Eurozone holiday hot spots.

The Post Office Barometer, which each year compares the cost to purchase eight essential holiday items in 42 popular tourist destinations, found Spain to be the cheapest destination following the country’s economic downturn.

Holidaymakers travelling to Spain this year could purchase all eight items which included a bottle of local beer, a glass of wine, a bottle of mineral water, a can of Coca-Cola or Pepsi, a cup of coffee, sunscreen, a pack of 20 Marlboro Lights cigarettes and a three course evening meal for two including a bottle of wine, all for just £36.14.

Meanwhile, the Barometer revealed that in Greece, where room rates are down 40% year on year, holiday spending costs were also down 11% with holiday makers able to purchase the eight essential items for £57.50.

Alex Francis, CEO of loveholidays.com commented: “We have noticed a significant increase in bookings and page impressions for Spain and Greece compared to this time last year. Spain will always be a top performer as it is a traditional favourite of British travellers, but we believe that the destination is receiving additional attention from price savvy holidaymakers looking to stretch their holiday budgets as far as possible.”

He continued: “Our site enables customers to search for holidays based on their budget rather than having to search by destination or departure date which means that they often find themselves looking at destinations, such as Spain and Greece, that they had not previously considered but which meet their needs and, most importantly, their budgets.

He added, “Holidaymakers want more than just great value flights and accommodation – they are also considering their holiday spending and are seeking destinations where they will get the most from their money. With household spending at an all-time low, people want to ensure that they can afford to buy the luxuries on holiday which they may not be able to afford at home.”

Alex concluded: “With room rates down significantly in many destinations, including Greece, we have seen an increase in bookings for four and five star resorts.”
