Study ranks the most passenger-friendly train stations in the UK

A study by Omio analysed the 30 most popular UK long-distance train stations in terms of punctuality, location, and amenities.

BERLIN – Omio, the travel platform for trains, buses and flights, has published a study in which the 30 most booked train destinations were examined. The researchers evaluated various factors including proximity to the city centre and businesses, the station's amenities, and punctuality, all of which contribute towards passenger comfort. The result is a ranking of the most passenger-friendly train stations in the UK.

This study reveals that the best train station in the UK is Edinburgh Waverley. This is due to 81 percent of the trains arriving on time, its impressive number of businesses within half a mile of the station including 395 shops, the many amenities on offer, in addition to its central location in Edinburgh city centre.

The second best train station in the UK is Glasgow Central, which scores highly across the board. Like Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central has an impressive range of shops, amenities, and a central location to boot; 4 out of 5 trains at Glasgow Central arrive on time. In comparison, the station that ranks at the bottom of the study is Coventry, where fewer than half of trains arrive on time.

Table 1: Ranking list of the ten best train stations in the UK with the evaluation results of selected factors and the overall evaluation.

The most passenger-friendly train station received a score of 100 and the least passenger-friendly station received a 0 score.

The third-best train station in the UK is Manchester Piccadilly, which scores highly thanks to its excellent range of amenities, its central location, and the impressive range of shops, bars, and restaurants nearby. In comparison, Manchester Victoria ranks 16th nationwide; the city’s second-largest station is dragged down due to its poorer range of amenities. However, Victoria has more trains arriving on time compared to Piccadilly (78% versus 75%).

The top-rated train station in London is Victoria, which scored highly for the number of shops, bars, and restaurants nearby, its amenities, and its location. London Liverpool Street is the capital’s most-punctual station, where 88% of trains arrive on time. London Paddington was the lowest-ranked out of the London stations included, placing 23rd nationwide.
