MIA is adding a total of eight new international service options to its growing route network in 2015, including five new international destinations.
MIAMI – Miami International Airport is America’s second-busiest airport for international passengers, with more than 20 million travelers arriving and departing the gateway aboard international flights each of the past two years. That impressive performance continues in 2015, supported by a slate of new international flights and destinations that – according to a recent economic impact study – directly translate to huge benefits for the local community, from new jobs to increased business revenues.
“Creating new jobs and prosperity for our residents are top priorities of my administration, and the leadership team at MIA continues to succeed on both of those fronts through their focused efforts to bring new international air service to our community,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “Our top economic engine is hitting on all cylinders.”
MIA is adding a total of eight new international service options to its growing route network in 2015, including five new international destinations. Pennsylvania-based transportation consultant Martin Associates, which has provided economic impact studies for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) since 2002, took an in-depth look at five of the new flights to determine their value to the local community. Assuming that they sustain operations at MIA for one full year, the five new international flights are projected to positively impact Miami-Dade County’s economy as follows:
- 3,435 jobs; and,
- $457 million in economic impact, which includes:
– $143 million in total income;
– $45 million in local purchases; and,
$1.7 million in state and local tax contributions
“Beyond the obvious goal of growing MIA’s global route network, there’s a reason why we are so focused on adding new international air service, and this study spells it out,” said MDAD Director Emilio T. Gonzalez. “The reality is that each new international destination and flight that we add to our network has the effect of someone starting a brand new business here in Miami-Dade County, and that’s clearly a good thing for our entire community.”
New international flights and service options included in Martin Associates’ study are: Thomas Cook Airlines’ twice-weekly service to Manchester, England; American Airlines’ daily Frankfurt service; Aruba Airlines’ five weekly flights to Aruba; Austrian Airlines’ five weekly flights to Vienna; and Turkish Airlines’ daily service to Istanbul. This year, MIA is also welcoming service to: Monterrey, Mexico on Aeromexico and American Airlines; Barranquilla, Colombia on American Airlines; and Cordoba, Argentina on Aerolineas Argentinas. Together, they will further contribute to the airport’s outsized impact on the local economy.
