Special guide released as part of the National Park Service’s 104th Birthday celebrations.

NEW YORK, NY – Tourlane, a leading online travel website for tailor-made vacations, has produced a special guide to the 30 best national parks in the United States. The research was conducted as part of the National Park Service’s birthday celebrations – August 28th will mark 104 years since the NPS was founded.

The guide was researched by Tourlane’s North American Travel Experts, who carried out a deep dive into all 62 national parks. The final 30 were chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Number of animal species
  • Number of bird species
  • Number of activities on offer
  • Overnight accommodation offering
  • Accessibility from major U.S. metropolitan areas

Yosemite climbs into first place in this year’s ranking, while the Everglades and Yellowstone sail into second and third respectively.

“2020 is the perfect year to travel domestically and explore the best national parks that the U.S. has to offer,” said Arlett Walleck, Senior Travel Product Manager for North America & Iceland. “National parks offer visitors a chance to escape crowded cities, while still being easily accessible by car from major population centers.”

Additional takeaways from the research:

  • Yellowstone is the oldest national park in the United States, dating back to 1872.
  • At more than twice the size of Delaware, Lake Clark National Park in Alaska is the largest national park in the ranking.
  • Delaware is the only state in the U.S. that does not have a national park.
  • Congaree is the smallest national park in the ranking, and would cover just 1% of Lake Clark National Park.
  • The Grand Canyon was the most-visited national park in the ranking last year, attracting almost six million visitors.
  • California is the best-represented state in this year’s ranking, with five of the top 30 national parks located there.
  • 18 states have national parks in the top 30 (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming).
