The babymoon boom hitting Scotland

The Old Larder, Innerleithen.

The agency’s social media research highlights this growing trend with online searches and direct babymoon enquiries on the up and the #babymoon attracting over 736,000 results on Instagram alone.

We’re all aware of a baby shower and a honeymoon so put the two together and the new craze sweeping Scotland for expectant first-time parents is the babymoon.

Cottages & Castles, Scotland’s longest established self-catering agency, has noted a marked increase in this market segment with an increase in the number of people booking small cosy cottages and romantic getaways.

The agency’s social media research also highlights this growing trend with online searches and direct babymoon enquiries on the up and the #babymoon attracting over 736,000 results on Instagram alone.

Health and wellness influencer and mum-to-be Olivia Elise Thomas, who has a combined audience of 9000, recently enjoyed a babymoon stay in Cottages & Castles’ The Old Larder, nestled in the wonderful Glen Estate, Peeblesshire. Olivia lives with her partner Danny in Great Sutton near Chester  and they are expecting their first baby together in August.

Olivia Elise Thomas commented: “We decided to have a babymoon to take time out for ourselves before our little one arrives. Our life is about to drastically change and we won’t be able to travel on a whim, so being able to escape day-to-day life for a short time is very important. It helps you to unwind physically and mentally and prepare for life with your newborn. It also gives you space to reflect and spend time together as a couple so that you become even more connected before your baby arrives.

“We wanted to stay in the UK as we didn’t feel comfortable going abroad so late in my pregnancy. We had never been to Scotland before but had heard so many great things about it and wanted to explore somewhere new. We were blown away by the absolutely stunning views on offer at The Old Larder and as I lead an active lifestyle, this holiday house was perfect for long romantic walks to the lake and exploring the beautiful glen. It was the ideal place to enjoy a much-needed babymoon with its romantic wood burning stove, sweeping staircase and cosy spacious charm throughout.”

Jemima Kirkwood, social media manager of Cottages & Castles, said: “For first-time expectant parents, the run up to their special arrival is a very exciting but busy time and we have noticed an emerging trend for couples keen to enjoy some quiet time before their little bump makes an appearance. With more education around parenthood and what to expect, it is no surprise to see our generation doing this more and more.”

“We have some really special places on our books that offer a relaxing short break in some of Scotland’s most beautiful and peaceful settings, allowing some much-needed rest and relaxation before the sleepless nights take hold.”

Scotland remains a top choice for people choosing to holiday at home. Customers booking properties through Cottages & Castles during 2018 were primarily from within Scotland at 55%, with 40% of staycationers coming from the rest of the UK and overseas visitors accounting for 5% of bookings.
