These are the most popular Christmas Markets in Europe

Although originally originating in Germany, these festive markets are now held in many other countries around the world and there are now hundreds – if not thousands – to choose from.

Holiday search engine, Holidu.co.uk, has analysed which are the most popular Christmas markets in Europe – and also in the UK!

It’s hard to imagine a more festive way to celebrate the season than by visiting a Christmas Market – sipping hot mugs of gluhwein in the cold winter air, shopping for hand-crafted gifts at wooden chalets, or snacking on classic wintery treats.

Although originally originating in Germany, these festive markets are now held in many other countries around the world and there are now hundreds – if not thousands – to choose from.

That’s why Holidu decided to find out which are the most popular cities in Europe for their beloved Christmas markets. As well as Europe, the company also analysed the most popular cities for Christmas markets in the UK for those wanting to stay a bit closer to home.

The Most Popular Christmas Markets in Europe

  • Vienna, Austria
  • Berlin, Germany
  • Strasbourg, France
  • Munich, Germany
  • Frankfurt, Germany
  • Nuremberg, Germany
  • Prague,  Czech Republic
  • Budapest, Hungary
  • Cologne, Germany
  • Salzburg,  Austria

Interesting to see that it's not a German city in the top spot right?! Although, the home of Christmas Markets has taken half of the top ten spots…

As well as Europe, the company also analysed the most popular cities for Christmas markets in the UK for those wanting to stay a bit closer to home.

The Most Popular Christmas Markets in the UK

  • Edinburgh, Scotland
  • Bath, England
  • Manchester, England
  • London, England
  • York, England
  • Nottingham, England
  • Birmingham, England
  • Glasgow, Scotland
  • Lincoln, England
  • Cardiff, Wales

Again, it's interesting not to see London in the top spot and Edinburgh instead taking the crown. Bath ranked the highest in England, which makes recent news of its 2021 cancellation even sadder – I'm sure people will be excited for it's 2022 return based on the data though.

The cities were ranked across a range of factors including search volume, Instagram hashtags, and the number of Christmas markets it hosts. For anyone considering visiting one of the festive cities, Holidu also found out the number of stalls in each, whether it has an ice rink, the likelihood of snow, and the average flight time from London.
