This autumn, at airberlin it is all about eco-efficiency

Germany’s second largest airline wins Eco-Aviation Award in the USA.

On 12th September airberlin received the “Silver Eco-Airline of the Year” award, given as part of the Eco-Aviation awards, by the American aviation magazine Air Transport World. At the official award ceremony in Washington D.C., the jury made special mention of airberlin’s fuel efficiency programme, which makes Germany’s second largest airline a pioneer in the area of eco-efficiency.

“We are delighted to have won this award. It is a great acknowledgement of the success of the comprehensive and continuous work we are doing in this field. However, we are not content to stop here. This is why airberlin is working on further projects and innovations, in addition to the 55 measures already being implemented as part of our eco-efficiency programme; these will help to constantly reduce fuel consumption in the direction of the 3-litre mark. This autumn, at airberlin it is all about eco-efficiency: over the coming weeks, the airline will present further details of the new measures such as software developed in-house for optimised air flow and a training programme for saving fuel when flying,” says Hermann Lindner, Vice President Environment and Infrastructure at airberlin, who received the award in Washington.

In 2012, Germany’s second largest airline set a new record with its average fuel consumption of 3.4 litres per 100 passenger kilometres flown. Through all the measures implemented last year airberlin reduced its CO2 emissions by a total of more than 100,000 tonnes. That is the equivalent of nearly 7,000 flights from Munich to Palma de Mallorca.

airberlin has won a number of awards for its commitment in the field of eco-efficiency.
