Travel plans up in the air: 23% of American adults plan to travel over the holidays

23% of American adults plan to travel over December, January and February; 18% plan to travel domestically, 7% internationally.

Americans are gearing up to travel over the holidays, according to Finder.com’s Travel Index. 23% of Americans plan to travel over December, January and February. That’s up from last month when just 18% of people had short-term travel plans.

Domestic travel is prevalent, with 18% of people planning to travel around the country, up from 14% last month. Meanwhile, international travel is up only slightly, with 7% of people planning to travel, compared to 6% last month.

Finder.com’s finance expert and Money Girl podcast host Laura Adams says travel will peak in December, but the Omicron announcement may cause some to rethink their plans.

“14% of American adults plan to travel during December, while about 7% say they’ll leave home in either January or February.

“It’s not surprising to see a spike in travel around the holidays when Americans want to reconnect with family and friends for celebrations,” she said.

“Finder’s survey was conducted before news of the Omicron variant, so many plans will likely be up in the air until we know more about its potential dangers.

“If you booked an international trip, consider any changes in border restrictions and entry requirements at your destination. However, since most Americans will be traveling domestically, their plans shouldn’t change much.”

Finder’s Travel Index is an ongoing survey, which has so far gathered responses from more than 220,000 people globally.
